Our team researched post-16 providers, engineering colleges, vocational colleges etc. We had an action-packed schedule that took us from side of the Wirral to the other.
Our first provider was Mersey Maritime Engineering College, based next to Priory Wharf and Cammell Laird shipbuilders. We were given a tour of the college and all the trades and apprenticeships they had to offer, from welding to engineering—including electrical engineering. We were also lucky enough to see tradesmen working on a naval warship that had just returned from Somalia in Africa, guarding shipping from the threat of Somalian pirates. The ship was undergoing a £50,000,000 refit to extend its life for a further 20 years.
We also visited the newly refurbished West Cheshire College and were impressed with the range of courses on offer there.
At Wirral Metropolitan College, we heard about the new partnership with Peel Port Holdings. We learnt that Peel Port Holdings are very enthusiastic about employing local people and certainly students who train with Wirral Met.
We looked at the Vocational College and were fortunate to experience taster sessions in carpentry and health and beauty.
My group of students really feel excited and motivated by what they have seen and heard. As a result, some have already chosen their preferred career path.
We were complimented on our superb conduct and maturity. All in all, an excellent week.
