A few weeks into the new school year, we asked some of our Year 7 students to reflect back on their experience of Ridgeway so far. Here is what they said.
You can read more Year 7 reflections in the October 2018 issue of Ridgeway New Times.
My first week at Ridgeway has been an adventure! There were so many people when I first walked in, but then I made some new friends and I felt like I had known them forever. All the teachers are so kind and friendly but there are so many of them; I am never going to remember everyone!
My first week was challenging, but now I am on my third week and I feel settled and it isn’t as scary as it was before. There are still a few things I need to get used to, but your first week of high school isn’t as scary as you think it is going to be.
Lunch is delicious! There is a lot of variety: cold foods, full meals, puddings and snacks. There are some new subjects like drama, French and Spanish, textiles, computing, learning for life and other things that everyone will enjoy.
On the first day I was quite nervous. At the bus stop I was feeling very insecure. When the bus got there, I was overjoyed as I made new friends!
When we got to Ridgeway, we were greeted with friendly faces. After that, we were put into our form groups, where I made even more friends. We got given our timetables, which tell us exactly where to go.
At my first subject, I had a lot of fun! Everything was kind of easy and they let us take as long as we want and didn’t rush!
I really love form time and I have absolutely loved getting to know my form tutor – Mr Beattie.
I’m sadly not in any classes with my best friend, Alicia, but that is why I really enjoy break and lunchtimes, as I get to see her. One of my favourite subjects is English, but I do thoroughly enjoy PE. I have been doing a lot of fitness and I have done the bleep test. In the bleep test, I finished with a score of 9.3. I have also joined the netball team!
The first few weeks have been an absolute whirlwind! My favourite time of day is getting to see my friends in my favourite lesson, which is PE. My bag is mostly heavy because of my kit, and also I’m on packed lunches now. It has been a lot of fun.
Ridgeway has been great for me! I have met lots of new friends, the lessons are fun and science is really cool – especially when we get to use the equipment! It’s strange having a different lunchtime schedule though, but I don’t mind. I was worried about going to different lessons, but I am used to it now. For a lot of my lessons, I have the same people. I like the uniform and it is different for me because I have never worn a blazer before. My form tutor, Miss Rapple, is amazing. She is so lovely and is always smiling.
I really enjoyed my first day at Ridgeway High School. I found some of my new friends – they are all so helpful and friendly. Also, I have met a lot of new teachers. They are really kind, and I also like the way they teach us lessons – I have found my subjects really interesting. I think that the new building is so beautiful because everything is really new and clean. My favourite subject is still maths, but I am really surprised that I have started to enjoy science!
On my first day at Ridgeway, the first thing we did was go to our form rooms with our form tutor – my form tutor is called Miss Grundy. I really enjoyed getting to know Miss Grundy! My favourite part of the day is form time.
I made some new friends during my classes. The first friend I made is called Maddie (she is also in my form). When it was break, I made another friend called Summer, who I have most of my classes with and who is really kind. At the end of the day, I made one more friend called Merab.
I really enjoy learning for life because the teacher is funny and makes us all laugh. My favourite teachers are Miss Lamb and Mr Heayns because they are both so kind. I have made lots of new friends including Leanne, Maddie and Merab, who are all extremely kind.
On the first day of school, I woke up feeling tired and a bit nervous, but as the week went by I felt more comfortable and confidence about coming to Ridgeway. So far, I am enjoying every aspect of high school. The food is delicious, and the teachers here make me feel safe and comfortable.
It has been two weeks since I began at Ridgeway. I love it so far, and I have met lots of new people and teachers. It’s rather strange, in all honesty. I know I love it here, but in my primary school we did things a lot differently: there weren’t multiple floors, we didn’t have to move from lesson to lesson, and my class only had two teachers.
My favourite lessons so far have been maths, English, learning for life, food studies, PE and French, not just because they were fun in primary school, but because the teachers in high school make the lessons much better. I tend to struggle in maths and PE, but Miss McCaffrey and Mr Clarke make the lessons enjoyable and that really helps me to learn.
I would definitely recommend this school to any Year 6 wondering what high school to attend. The teachers are great, and they try their best to make their lessons enjoyable and fun for us. I love this school.
I am really enjoying Ridgeway High School! There is so much to do here. I’ve met many new friends and teachers; they are all very nice here. I love it. It’s very different from primary – but in a good way! I would definitely recommend this school for all current Year 6s. All of the teachers and students are very caring. This school is way higher than my expectations! The lessons and the activities we are given are fun. At first I was nervous, but after the first day I realised that there is no reason to be scared.
Primary was cool but this school is AMAZING! The food is very nice, and there is lots of variety. The outside is huge and the PE space is its own building and it’s so big! We have so much fun and I have so many new friends, such as Morgan and Ava.
