Miss Carey took her Year 10 BTEC Applied Science group to visit the Fiddlers Ferry power station in Widnes.
Students were given a tour of the power station to discover where our electricity comes from and how it is generated. They also enjoyed a walk around the site’s nature reserve, learning about the conservation methods in place to protect the endangered newts! Archie Barrett was particularly keen to check out the newts’ favourite hiding places [see picture, left].
There was all-round astonishment at just how colossal the cooling towers are. The girls took advantage of a great photo opportunity to try and reach the top [see picture, below]!
This trip is just one of many, planned to support students in the completion of coursework and enhance the delivery of the BTEC vocational science course. We want students to experience the application of science in the ‘real world’.
